The Wolf & Mister Funk

Posted by shanoah on June 30, 2009

Well, there were a lot of directions I could have gone from my last post.

I could have kept going with Wesley Willis. (And I probably should mention that when I call him schitzophrenic, he has actually been diagnosed with schitzophrenia. He doesn’t just act that way.) But I decided I’d rather stay with the funk.

So, here is a cover of Al Foster‘s Night of the Wolf, being done by a group called Esperanto. As I think artificial languages are cool, and I love whatever instrument their using in this (a thermin, maybe?), I’m all for this one. And, frankly, I could listen to this all day. Looks like it was on the same album as the Hippy Skippy Moon Strut, which isn’t too suprising.

And now for a rather silly, but, more importantly, rather funky song called Dr Jackyll & Mr Funk, by Jackie McLean. Yeah, it’s silly. But admit it, you like it, cheezy as lines like:

Dreary and dull, like somebody numbed his skull…

are…

Hippy Skippy Murder

Posted by shanoah on June 29, 2009

Well, continuing with the all-Shanoah-all-the-time marathon, I heard two songs recently that it occurred to me would be very inappropriate to play together. And, well, I don’t need much more invitation then that…

The first one is some funky hip jive along the line of my last post. This is the Mighty Show Stoppers, with the Hippy Skippy Moon Strut. Yes, really. Makes you want to dance, but I think large doses of caffeine or something stronger would be neccessary to keep the pace.

And, to totally change pace, here’s a song by a schizophrenic black guy named Wesley Willis. His catchy, upbeat title for this song is I Murdered Your Family. You want to guess what it’s about?

Make The Road By Walking & Working Your Body

Posted by shanoah on June 28, 2009

Well, I’m assuming Seans still playing City of Heroes. With a city of superheroes and one of villians, you would think a city of normal people would be around somewhere..

So, my last post was Market Me To Children. I thought I’d follow that up with an instrumental by the Menahan Street Band called Make the Road By Walking. It’s upbeat with a nice groove to it. Puts me in a good mood, anyways.

And now that we’ve done some walking, time for some exercise. This song is Work My Body by the Leafhounds off the album Growers of Mushroom. This may be off the wall, but somehow I suspect drugs were involved in the production of this music. 🙂

Market Me To Children

Posted by shanoah on June 27, 2009

Well, I’m ready for a quick change of pace from Frank Zappa. So today I’ve got a song by Scott Matthew called Market Me To Children.

A melancholy piece by a man with a neat looking beard, I thought this was worth a play. Though it’s the haunting piano work at the beginning that attracted my attention.

Jesus Thinks You’re…

Posted by shanoah on June 26, 2009

Well, no new deaths today that I know of, though I haven’t really checked too closely. It’d be pretty eerie if a new celebrity started dying each day for a blog theme, after all. Like Michael Jackson, who is now confirmed to have died of a heart attack. (The default method of dying from having your name written in the notebook from Death Note, as I recall.)

Don’t think we had a firm established theme before that, so I’ll fall back on what I had been doing: posting Frank Zappa songs.

This one’s a rather nice rundown of televangelists and other religious groups, Jesus Thinks You’re A Jerk. Includes jabs at Jim & Tammy, and the Ku Klux Klan, among others. Pity the lyrics shown are occassionally misspelled, or incorrect. (Bush for Pat was one noticed, for example.)

It’s a fun song lambasting various people and groups that need it, anyways. And no, not work safe.

Say

Posted by shanoah on June 25, 2009

All right, you know it’s bad when you can keep celebrities dying going as a theme.

Ed McMahon died yesterday, and apparently Michael Jackson died today. Reasons for his death haven’t yet been announced.

So, I thought I’d play the music video for Say Say Say, performed by Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney today. (Wonder what becomes of the Beatles music catalog?)

And as a bonus, I’ll throw in both of them singing The Man. And, no, Paul is not dead; it just worked out that both songs I played had him in them…

Heres Johnnnny!

Posted by shanoah on June 24, 2009

Nope, no Barry Manilow-induced themes here today.

Don’t know if you heard, but Ed McMahan died yesterday. Cause of death hasn’t been specified, but he’s known to have, as I recall, a broken neck, cancer, and pneumonia. So it was probably one of those.

And the moment I heard that news, I knew exactly what song I was playing today. This song is from Weird Al‘s Polka Party cd, and is entitled Here’s Johnny!. Catchy song, actually, from one of these Weird Al cds you rarely here about (though I own it, of course).

6-23-09 DJ Hell – Copa

Posted by Sean on June 23, 2009

Actually, I don’t really get the mouth-foam-inducing fury that inflicts some people when the conversation (or the radio) turns to Barry Manilow fnord. But since the conversation has turned to Barry Manilow fnord – and to sampling – here’s a song with sampled Barry Manilow fnord. It’s DJ Hell’s Copa, which pulls much of its DNA from Barry Manilow’s fnord Copacabana.

So, does this mean that we’re going to be in the throes of a Barry Manilow fnord theme for the next two weeks? Ouch.

Something’s in the air?

Posted by shanoah on June 23, 2009

Ah, so that’s where you’d gotten to, Sean. You’ve been playing a teenage machine gunner while I was playing Teenage Prostitute. Ah well, it happens.

So now you’ve played Daft Punks Superheroes. And you know, I remember the post you did about Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger. You talked a lot about music sampling in relation to it[1]. And having heard Superheroes, I think it’s a good time to play Barry Manilow. Specifically, Who’s Been Sleeping In My Bed?.

You heard the lyrics at the beginning, right?

I hope so, since Daft Punk repeated them over and over again in Superheroes.

And now you know what it takes to get me to play Barry Manilow on the blog. And here I was thinking of playing the Mama’s and the Papa’s as the likely consequence of a Teenage Prostitute and Easy Meat. Or just more Frank Zappa.

Perhaps next time.

[1] Which is one reason why I remembered it. I like that sort of thing.

6-22-09 Daft Punk – Nightvision/Superheroes

Posted by Sean on June 22, 2009

Well, it seems I haven’t posted for the past five days. I blame City of Heroes. Turns out that is one evil game. Eats time like a black hole. I must have spent a quarter of my weekend playing that damn thing [1].

Well, City of Heroes is about superheroes [2], and so is this song from Daft Punk… I think. Actually, it’s videos for two Daft Punk songs – Nightvision and Superheroes. They’re both from Interstella 5555, a series of videos for Daft Punk’s album Discovery by Japanimation great Leiji Matsumoto. You’ve seen an earlier video in this series on this blog: Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger.

[1] By the way, Shanoah, this is not the reason I called off the game. Something really did come up.

[2] Like my character Debbi Disturbed, a 13 year-old cheerleader armed with a big fucking gun.
