Boogie On

Posted by shanoah on March 31, 2009

Well, with you not posting Tues. and Weds., guess that means I should plan for my posts those days to be followed up on. At least, by anyone other then me.

For today, first I have a 1975 time capsule video featuring a song by Stevie Wonder, “Boogie On Reggae Woman”. Good music, weird animation at the beginning, and women rolling aroud in mud.

Well, maybe not the last. Large quantities of funk, anyways, which is enough for me.

And as long as we have the whole Stevie Wonder funk thing going on, lets play “Higher Ground”. Always liked that song. Not that there’s much music by Stevie Wonder I don’t like. The man’s amazing.

3-30-09 Arlo Guthrie – Alice’s Restaurant Massacree

Posted by Sean on March 30, 2009

Well, any discussion about drug use and illegal behavior wouldn’t be complete without illegal dumping (and creating a nuisance!) and how to dodge the draft. In other words, it wouldn’t be complete without Alice’s Restaurant Massacree by Arlo Guthrie (Wikipedia entry here, so you know it’s wrong).

Filmed live 40 years after the incident that inspired the song at the deconsecrated church that Alice M. Brock called home in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, with scenes from the 1969 movie. Lyrics to the original 1967 recording here. Courtesy of jguth3.

By the way, I’ll be taking off from the blog on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from now on. I’ve been doing this blog pretty much nonstop for over a year and decided that it’s time for the occasional break.

You know, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons sounded familiar, and thinking about it, I placed it. Most of you probably recall this song, even if you don’t recall who sang it. The song is Oh, What A Night (December 1963). The song title is, anyways. This video is from around ’76.

For some reason, possibly because a international cover of it was right before Oh What A Night on my Cover the World cd from Putomuyo, which I’ve posted about before, that song calls another to mind.

So I’ll also play In The Summertime, by Mungo Jerry, a song from back in the days when you didn’t have to look like an actor to get a record contract. A song with a message about drinking and driving in it. Specifically, advocating it. It’s such a cheerful, happy song, though.

In the summertime, when the weather is high
You can chase right up and touch the sky
When the weather’s fine
You got women, you got women on your mind
Have a drink, have a drive
Go out and see what you can find

3-29-09 Cyriak – Beggin’ in My Territory

Posted by Sean on March 29, 2009

I think we can all agree that mad scientists have gone around the bend, Shanoah.

But what do mad scientists do to pay the bills? Creating monsters to conquer the world is an expensive proposition. There’s a huge initial capital investment, and there just aren’t scientific grants available to pay for creating giant mutant attack crabs [1], mostly because the people handing out the grants are also the same people who called you mad mad I tell you!

So what does a British animator/mad scientist do to pay the rent and keep the superfluous sparking bzz-bzz machines in his laboratory sparking and bzz-bzzing? Why, he animates. Like a mad scientist.

Cyriak has done a number of commercial animated shorts, including station identifications for and music videos. These are two of those videos.

The first is a video for a Pilooski remix of Frankie Valli and the Four Season’s 1967 hit Beggin’, commissioned by 679 Productions (album site here).

And the second is from the other side of the war of the sexes: My Territory by the two blokes at Grand Popo Football Club and commissioned by Pschent Music.

[1] A perennial problem with Ron Jeremy, I understand.

Around the Bend

Posted by shanoah on March 29, 2009

Well, mad scientists ponder perpetual motion, and have gone around the bend. And Creedence Clearwater Revival happens to have done a song about just that.

And of course mad scientists are all about electricity, or later ones about nuclear power. They are hazy forces man was not meant to know. And being a mad scientist is all about tampering with the unknown.

Of course, like anyone. mad scientists could always use some good background music while creating, and CCR is generally a good choice.

3-28-09 Cyriak – BeastEnders

Posted by Sean on March 29, 2009

Well, mad scientists need lots of electricity (don’t know why, they just do), which of course leads us to: EastEnders!

I know what you’re thinking: “Sean, you are obviously an unrecognized genius, not to mention rakishly handsome with a devil-may-care attitude that drives the ladies crazy. But what could an acclaimed long-running British soap opera about a working class neighborhood possibly have to do with mad scientists?” [1]

Well, leave it to British animator Cyriak to make that deductive leap. You remember what I said in my Robogran post about Cyriak’s animation lacking a certain coherency? This is what I meant.

Not that incoherency is a bad thing. Far from it. I find coherency and sanity to be highly overrated.

Why, this short is ready for DVD! It even has a deleted scene!

Well, i suppose those robot grandmothers must have a big power bill with the amount of electricity they are using. And the video is bizarre as ever.

As long as we’re on the subject of electricity, though, thought I’d play Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band at the beach, playing a song on that same subject. At the very least, you probably know him as a longtime friend of Frank Zappa, and possibly from when I posted Bat Chain Puller here.

Thought about playing more sex kitten videos, as Meow Meow has a number of videos on Youtube, but I felt more like songs about high voltage. 🙂

3-27-09 Cyriak – Robogran

Posted by Sean on March 27, 2009

Okay, but when is Meow Meow gonna start singing “Wilkommen, Bienvenue, Welcome”?

Going from sex kittens to what the porn industry likes to call “mature women”… A theme that runs throughout much of British animator Cyriak Harris’ oufre (literally, his Denver omelet) is one that I believe resonates with almost everyone, no matter their race, nationality or creed, a timeless symbol that springs from the deepest roots of the human experience: monster grannies. I don’t know why. Possibly it’s the fallout of a suppressed childhood memory involving his beloved Grandma Elsie, a vat of radioactive waste and a lot of running and screaming. It’s just there. Monty Python has their crossdressing, Cyriak has his hideously mutated nanas.

An excellent example of this is Robogran, probably my favorite Cyriak short . Believe it or not, Robogran really isn’t representative of his other videos on YouTube. They aren’t quite as… coherent as this.

Courtesy, not surprisingly, of cyriak.

Deutsche Miserere

Posted by shanoah on March 27, 2009

Well, that was rather bizarre. And I know what you mean about the Japanese. Or what America did to the American Indians. Or how Britain treated native Gaelic speakers. Or how most of Europe treated Gypsies.

People have a long history of treating one another badly, really.

Today, I’m playiong a political song, being performed by “Meow Meow” with Amanda Palmer of the Dresden Dolls. The song is “Deutsche Miserere” by Hanns Eisler, being sung in Boston in 2007.

As you can tell, Meow Meow is quite a character. Especially since she spends most of the song lying on the floor so you can’t see her boobs. ^_-

And no, this is not worksafe. Not with that outfit.

3-26-09 The Cyriakness of Cyriak

Posted by Sean on March 26, 2009

Well, I’ve threatened to do this, and now is the time, I think (especially since all the remaining Omodaka videos have something to do with Jet Ski racing. Omodaka has a think for Jet Ski racing, I’ve found) (and since thinking about how the Japanese have treated the Ainu – much like the way Americans have treated Native Americans, I understand – suddenly makes me want to get the hell away from anything Japanese [1]).

You may remember that I posted a What the FUCK about a week ago with a rather creepy animation loop set to some rather creepy music (in other words, it fit right in on this blog). It was made by British musician and animator Cyriak Harris (site here, MySpace here), and it turns out that he’s rather… prolific. This is lucky for me, as I have fodder for posts well into the next week. Whether it’s lucky for you, dear reader, I leave to you to decide.

To give you an idea of the Cyriakness of Cyriak, he’s been kind enough to put together a mindfuck mix reel, submitted for your approval.

Oh, and if you’ve see March 20’s What the FUCK, you may experience a certain amount of déjà vu at 2:52 in this video. Psychotics often experience that  just before they suffer a full schizophrenic break. Just so you know.

[1] These little unlit bits of Japanese history are the kind foreign devil otaku don’t like to think about too much. Rape of Nanking, anyone?
