11-16-08 The Mysterious Geographic Explorations of Jasper Morello

Posted by Sean on November 16, 2008

Yes, Shanoah! I have travelled into the past to the mysterious world of THE FUTURE! I bring you!… a matchbook, some cocktail napkins and a restroom vending machine condom from a Holiday Inn… FROM THE FUTURE!

Anyway, I’m going to stay with the steampunk/mad scientist theme today, because who knows when we’ll get back to it on this blog? (Answer: two weeks tops)

I came across The Mysterious Geographic Explorations of Jasper Morello, by Australian director Anthony Lucas, while searching for yesterday’s neat thing. It exists in a world dear to every steampunk fan’s heart, with difference engines, airships and lots and lots of gears. What sets it apart, though, is its silhouette animation. It’s so striking that it earned an Academy Awards and BAFTA nods for Best Animated Short in 2005.

According to the Jasper Morello Web site, this is only the first of a trilogy of shorts. There are even plans for a feature-length Jasper Morello movie. Here’s hoping.
