A chainsaw, an assault rifle, and a homicide

Posted by shanoah on November 4, 2008

Well, Sean, I’m going to depart from the norm a bit tonight (and the election) and talk about a crime from the Las Vegas Review Journal. It seems to be spreading over multiple newspapers at this point.

At 1:10 am yesterday (11/3), witnesses saw William Keck walk into the the Fountains at Villa Cordova apartments over on Eastern and Sahara, with an assault rifle and a chainsaw.

He is then accused of cutting a hole in one of the apartments doors with the chainsaw, one belonging to his estranged wife, and opening fire with the rifle.

The neighbors heard 9 shots, then a pause for reloading, and six more shots. Aingel, who was 18 weeks pregnant, lost the baby, but is now in stable condition in the hospital. Her lover, Jonathan Lestelle, who she had been living with is dead, as is a dog which was in the apartment.

He was arrested in his apartment an hour and a half later.

I suppose reading his spock.com page, which states:

Rabid, Psychotic, All of the ABove. I like guns, beer, tabacco, red meat, nuclear weapons, toxic gasses, Tattoos and the apocalypse foretold. I hate pretty much anything with a face that needs to be smashed in, I hate Liberals, and left wing Homos. I hate Commies and all alike. Things need to be blown up. If you have a death wish, I can help you scratch that itch. MySpace
Born:
1983

You might not be surprised. I was, though. You see, Billy Keck was an ex-coworker of mine, who was let go a month or two ago. I didn’t know him well, and, yeah, he had the whole tough guy image with tattoos and all, but he always seemed to be a nice guy under it all.

I guess you never can tell.

Which shouldn’t be news. One of my other coworkers was telling me recently about a job he used to have on a bus line that gave tours, and these two Islamic guys were on one of the tours asking questions like “Why does America have so many religions?”.

They later crashed airplanes into the World Trade Center. Seriously. His boss thought the names looked familiar afterwards, and checked her records.

Oh well, time for some music, I suppose:

Smackwater Jack – Carole King

Have I ever mentioned how much I like Carole King’s Tapestry? No? Consider it mentioned. So many of her songs from that album became hits for her, or other musicians, and were covered endlessly…

Willy Taylor – June Tabor & Martin Simpson

And, of course, a traditional murder ballad I happen to like. I don’t, naturally, condone any of the behavior described. I may be crazy, but not that way…

Update:

The Las Vegas Sun had an article with more information and a mugshot.

William John Keck

This is by far the worst I’ve ever seen Billy looking. [2] That and a statement by him about being on several medications at the time really makes me think he may have been going through some sort of reaction to the drugs in combination.

Or another possibility, if they were switching medication, would be withdrawal symptoms. I wish, aside from a mention in the comments of one of them possibly being Seroquel, that they had more information.

Naturally, that doesn’t excuse what happened, but it makes it a lot more understandable. Otherwise you just have to wonder how someone who went on a killing spree could have put together a website like this for a badly injured friend.

So at least I can be somewhat reassured that I didn’t misjudge him that badly. Of course, that doesn’t help Jonathan or Angel, but it eases my mind a bit.

[2] Of course, mugshots are good at that, but even taking that into account, just a look at his eyes tells you something’s wrong.

    You’ve got some balls.
Like I say to these so-called journalists. Get the facts before you start writing.
Billy is nothing like those terrorists. He’s got issues, yes, but he isn’t cold blooded.
He has a heart and he needs help. When are people going to see the bigger picture?

Perhaps I wasn’t making myself as clear as I meant to when I wrote that. I was fairly shaken up over hearing it; that is why I wrote it.

The point I meant to make was that learning this was a radical paradigm shift for me and not for the better. I didn’t think he was someone who would try to shoot and kill anyone, let alone a pregnant woman.

Now I know better, and the realization was not a pleasant one. I didn’t intentionally set up the terrorist comparison, though, and I do hope he gets help with his issues.

And I really wish he’d gotten help before people had died.

Billy does indeed have “issues”, He had planned to do this to Ainjil for awhile. He knew exactly what he was doing. He killed her animals before, he’s made numerous threats, he’s hurt people before and almost klled a man in Havasu. He couldnt handle the fact that Ainjil was happy and that Caine was more of a man than he could ever hope to be. Caine was so loving, appreciative, friendly and just an amazing being. When he was around he made you feel good. I do hope Billy gets better, I hope he gets better and gets to spend the rest of his miserable life behind bars, and realizes what a terrible thing he has done and gets “harrased” by his prison mates every day. He doesnt deserve to die, he doesnt deserve peace. And for anyone reading this, I knew all 3 of them….

  4. I realize I’m coming late to the “party”, as it were, but I felt the need to weigh in on this. I’ve known Jonathan, aka Caine, since before he was born. His mom and I have been friends since before most of you were born. SmoO wrote that Billy had issues but that he wasn’t cold blooded. If using a chainsaw to a door open and ambush two unarmed people with an assault rifle isn’t cold blooded, then I guess I need to be educated. That appears very cold blooded to me. And plenty of people are on medications, but they don’t do what this man did.

In the meantime, how many lives have been touched by this tragedy? Parents should not have to bury their children. Grandparents should not have to watch the children burying a precious grandchild. Children should not loose their parent in an untimely manner. My friend will never see her son again on this earth. Her grandson will only know his father through those of us who remember him and tell him our Jonathan/Caine stories.

And just for the record, you don’t have to be from another country to be a terrorist. Anytime someone commits a crime, it is an act of terror and therefore, by definitaion, Billy Keck is a terrorist. At the very least, he is no better than they are. He plotted and executed a plan of murder. Isn’t that what the terrorists did?

May God have mercy on what passes for his miserable soul.

I agree. You are so correct. This is untimely, unjust, and uncalled for. My Deepest condolences and appologies to not just you but Caine’s family.

From what I have gathered on that scumbag, he was discharged from the Navy = “OTH”. All I can say is if this is true, it demonstrates precisely why the US Department of Defense needs to do away with discharge statuses less than “General”.

I’m not saying Honorable all around… I’m saying those who would receive OTH or less need to be CLEANED UP in a tub by a man with 2 large cases of Su and a hat/trenchcoat, like in socialist countries. Beings like this who have already betrayed the country do NOT deserve to be released back into society.

I know that sounds extreme, but had the Navy ended his existence those innocent lives would still be with us wouldn’t they? Again, it’s horrific what had to occur… but I can’t help but analyze and express my views of what should be done to prevent it from happening in the future.

I’m going to be in Carson City Correc behind the glass the day of his execution to throw a 3pk of raincoats at Billy’s parents just to make my point. 1st ammendment (which these kiling machines USDD are releasing into society to terrorize us for) isn’t it??

I went to high school with him, and I knew he was a seriously disturbed individual then. I stayed away from him after getting to know his girlfriend, who frightened me with the things she had to say about him. He has always been a dark, hurtful person, and probably needed serious therapy years ago.

I always wondered if he would ever explode like this. I’m sorry to say it, but I’m not the least bit surprised. I am thoroughly disgusted, however, and pity those who suffer in his path.

Billy has been aboslutely nuts for as long as I’ve known him (since he was 16). He once held a gun to the back of my head. He use to call me and speak in tounges. The navy locked him in an asylem then kicked him out, section 8. Don’t defend a murderer when you don’t even know the whole story. He’s needed help for a long time and would never accept any. This was not a result of medications. Are you really ignorant enough to think that a reaction to medications could make someone take the lives of three other beings? One of which was supposedly the love of his life. That picture alone shows how deeply disturbed he is. All this absolutely disgusts me.

    – I don’t care how many issues someone has.. everyone has issues. Murdering an innocent child, a caring man and trying to kill a girl you were supposed to have loved at one point is not excusable. No matter what justification, that is the height of selfishness. I don’t care if he was a saint at one point in his life, now he deserves worse than any punishment I can think of…

I knew Caine (Jon) and like others say here.. he was a caring, nice guy and a good friend and anyone he loved must be the same.

I don’t understand defending someone who could do that to him…

I am not the same anonymous that commented above, but I also knew Billy in High School, and I was also not extremely surprised by this news. He was pretty obviously tormented back then, and I remember speaking with several others at the time who thought so. People frequently claim they never saw it coming when someone flips and goes psychotic, but I think a lot of people saw this coming. I was actually more surprised to find out he had become homophobic, because he wasn’t that way when he was 17.

I knew Billy more than Anjil. Billy was a “friend” of my ex and used to come over to our place sometimes. When I first met him he seemed like a dumb jock and was dating some silly bimbo. I didn’t see him for a few years and then when I saw him again, he was this rockabilly racist sicko. He got a tattoo about killing and eating babies. He was so over-the-top that I almost thought he was just doing it for attention, but I realized that was who he really was and if anything, he was trying to guage his own sickness by the reaction of others when he acted more himself. I couldn’t stand being around him, so I left the house whenever he was over and worried about my pets! My ex tried convincing me the whole time he was harmless and wouldn’t hurt anything. I met Anjil years after Billy and thought she was a nice and intelligent person and truly cared about animals. They didn’t seem like a good personality match.
