10-24-08 Don Hertzfeldt – Rejected Cartoons

Posted by Sean on October 24, 2008

I sense someone trying to get me out of my comfort zone and post something beyond my usual song-I-heard-on-WFMU posts.

Well, ’tain’t doin’, McGee. Nope nope nope nope nope. I picture myself much like Anton LaVey in his later life, ensconced in his own little cocoon of weirdness (and Satanism). In other words: I am a geek.

Besides, I’m going to be going far enough outside my comfort zone when I go stumping for Obama tomorrow and have to (gasp!) talk to real live people… and some of them will be girls. Ew! I’ll bring along a notebook and post all the sordid details – Tawdry Stripper-and-Porn-Star-Intensive Sex Orgies At Obama Campaign Headquarters, McCain Supporters Jump Ship By The Trainload At The News.

But those Garfield Minus Garfield cartoons got me to thinking that I should post a cartoon. So I typed “cartoon” into YouTube, choose one of the many “banned cartoons” listed (“Bugs Bunny puts on blackface and calls blacks ‘watermelon-eating niggers’! Why oh why would that be banned!”) and promptly lost half my sanity points. [1]

This cartoon documents the slow and tortuous descent into madness of animator Don Hertzfeldt, who was commissioned to make commercials for various companies. To give you an idea of how bad things get, here’s a caption from the cartoon:

Don’s clear and steady downhill state continued. Soon he was completing commercial segments entirely with his left hand.

I’m not even going to ask what his right hand was doing. [2]

Anyway, Hertzfeldt’s madness slowly consumes him, and the cartoon world that he created. The final scene is a pretty accurate depiction of a cartoon character’s facial expression upon witnessing the soul-consuming, existential quantum madness of Azathoth.

Hey, it could have been worse. I could have just punted and gone with Cartoons I’d Like To Fuck.

[1] If you know what that’s a reference to, then you too are a geek.

[2] No, I didn’t go there. “Going there” assumes that I ever left “there” in the first place.
