Wheels In the Sky

Posted by shanoah on July 17, 2008

My theme of circles yesterday had spread somewhat into Wheels, so I thought this was an appropriate time to post this.

I’m sure you’ve heard this song before; and this is the version you’re likely to think of:

Wheel In the Sky – Journey (1978 / Steve Perry)

This is the classic Journey, with Steve Parry as the lead singer. No one sings like him, right?

Thing is, in 1998, he injured his hip in Hawaii, and is unable to perform without hip replacement surgery; surgery he was not yet willing to have done.

(He has since had the surgery. They just wanted him to do it immediately, and he wasn’t ready yet.)

Since then, there have been a series of replacements:

Wheel In the Sky – Journey (2001 / Steve Augeri)

From 1998 to 2006, they had Steve Augeri as lead singer. He doesn’t seem to be too bad. He might be trying a little too hard to be Steve Parry.

And also, what is with that outfit?

However, he got a throat infection and was replaced; first temporarily, then permanently:

Wheel In the Sky – Journey ( 2007 / Jeff Scott Soto)

I’m afraid I’m not impressed. He isn’t nearly as good as either Steve, and has that “The audience should be singing for me” attitude. The whole style just doesn’t fit.

They must have not been that happy with him either; They replaced him within a year:

Wheel In the Sky – Journey (2008 / Arnel Pineda )

They announced they were moving in a new direction, and hired Arnel Pineda. While he seems to be picking up a few too many things from JSS, he’s very energetic, and seems to be a good singer.

Since he just got picked up, it should be interesting watching how he progresses with the band. Provided he doesn’t get replaced like all the others.

I’m still convinced the Steve Parry version is the best of the 4, though. And really, there should be 5: “Wheel In the Sky” was written when Robert Fleischman was the lead singer. I haven’t found his version yet, though. 😦
