My Sweet Lord (He’s So Fine)

Posted by shanoah on July 17, 2008

Admittedly, my transition from the last post to this is a little iffy, since it relies on a thematic link between “Jesus Built My Hod Rod” and “My Sweet Lord”.

I think that’s close enough, though. But first, I thought I’d play the Chiffons:

He’s So Fine – The Chiffons

Here we have the Chiffons, singing their top hit “He’s So Fine”. You may recall this from any number of places, including a cheesy Whoopi Goldberg movie.

My Sweet Lord – George Harrison

And here we have George Harrison singing his top hit, “My Sweet Lord“, which you may remember from it being played friggin everywhere. But that’s for a reason; it’s a good song.

What’s the connection, you may ask?

A Short Comparison ( RMBTalent)

Quite a lot, actually.

You see, they share the musical phrases “G-E-D” & “G-A-C-A-C” in the same pattern, and have somewhat similar lyrics; enough that George Harrison was successfully sued for “unintentionally copying” the song.

He later actually bought the rights to the song “He’s So Fine”. Of course, I’m simplifying a bit. You can read about it in more detail here.

Thus was George Harrison’s introduction to piracy:

The Pirate Song – George Harrison

So, to tie it all together, here’s Eric Idle, and George Harrison singing about pirates. And we come around circle yet again.
