5-25-25-08 Weird Al Makes Fun of Two Songs For the Price of One!

Posted by Sean on May 25, 2008

Weird Al, huh? Well, I’m sure I’m more than capable of following up on that thread.

Finding a Weird Al video with embedding enabled, it turns out, is like finding hen’s teeth. That’s why this post isn’t comparing and contrasting Gangsta’s Paradise and Amish Paradise, as I had planned. I finally, in exasperation, went straight to the source, alyankovic (site here), and pulled a video that didn’t have embedding disabled. (These are the things I go through to bring you your blog. No, you don’t have to thank me) This is Bedrock Anthem, off 1993’s Alapalooza.

Bedrock Anthem is a little odd for Al (relatively speaking, of course), because it parodies two songs. And they both happen to be two of my faves from the Red Hot Chili Peppers (MySpace here). The first, of course, is Under the Bridge, off 1991’s Blood Sugar Sex Magik. Interestingly enough, this video was directed by Gus Van Sant, who directed another of my faves, Good Will Hunting.

The second is one of the happiest songs that RCHP ever put out – second only, in my opinion, to Higher Ground and also one of the most pagan songs you’ll ever hear outside of a Ren Faire or metal band: Give It Away, also off Blood Sugar Sex Megik. Of interesting note was the Google ad for “Christian Rock Videos” on the same page as this video. Video by Stéphanie Sednaoui.

Mickey & Ricky

Posted by shanoah on May 25, 2008

In that case, why don’t I go ahead and post the Weird Al video I was talking about. I agree with you on the deer, btw, Sean. That’s one of the reasons why I really liked the book “Through the Ice” (by Robert Kornwise & Piers Anthony). Of course, it affects your reading of a book when you know that the original author is dead, and that the co-author rewrote larrge sections of text and completed it, too.

Anyways, on to my Weird Al video for the day:

Hey Ricky – Weird Al Yankovic

Here we are with “Hey Ricky”, Weird Al’s parody of “Mickey”. It’s one of these parodies that I think came out better then the original.

The actress playing Lucy in the video is the same person doing her voice in the song, Tress MacNeille. You may know her from the Simpsons, Futurama, Animaniacs, Tiny Tunes, Chip & Dales Rescue Rangers, or a dozen other places. She’s obviously a very skilled voice actress. She’s even in Fallout 1 & 2!

Minor quibble some people may catch: one line of he song states “every day’s a rerun and the laughter’s always canned”. The laughter on “I Love Lucy” wasn’t canned, it was live.

Mickey – Toni Basil

And here is the original song. And the music video for it, with various cheerleaders who would no doubt not be accepted in tryouts if they were actually trying out to become a chearleader. I kind of like the song, even if it is a bit repetitive, but I can’t really say too much for this music video.

Though, would you believe Toni Basil is 39 in this video? I suppose all that makeup helps…
