5-14-08 The Mighty Mighty Bosstones – The Impression that I Get

Posted by Sean on May 14, 2008

Okay, yet again I’m dating myself with my music choices. This is The Impression that I Get, off 1997’s Let’s Face It from Mighty Mighty Bosstones (MySpace here). Forgive me for the mushiness, but I guess all the ska I listened to for yesterday’s post put me in the mood.

This song was released during the grunge-fueled indie boom of the 1990s, when it seemed like anyone with a guitar and a drum kit could and did get a recording contract.

But it’s also a song from my youth, from when I was worked eighty hours a week as a newspaper reporter and worked up to 20 hours straight on deadline day – the worst days of my life somehow becoming, as the years pile on, the best years of my life. Maybe it’s the gloss of youth or the association with a time when I could still put in hours like that, but rarely have I heard anything this freewheeling or happy.

I’m afraid I fell asleep when I meant to be posting this, so today’s post is put together in somewhat of a hurry. Sorry about that.

Today I decided on a theme of songs involving the radio. There have been quite a number of them, really. I decided to kick that off with a classic REM song:

Radio Free Europe – REM

I’ve heard this song any number of times on REM’s album Eponymous, and always liked it.

Video Killed the Radio Star – the Buggles

This was actually the first video to be shown on MTV. Hurrah for purple hair and people in tubes. And, yes, this has been covered a few times.

Turn Up the Radio -Autograph

And here we are with pink hair. Well, that’s glam rock for you. Still, it’s a nice fun loud song.
