Doctor Hook & the Medicine Show

Posted by shanoah on April 26, 2008

You know, Sean, I’m about the same way with music. A Japanese female vocalist group covering “No Woman, No Cry”? Ladysmith Black Mambazo singing a cover of Africa? A Finnish singer named Wimme singing a Sámi yoik about Texas? I’m so there.

Of course, youtube doesn’t cooperate with me and produce videos with half the music I like. I certainly would have featured a cd I own called Moonflower by a band of the same name by now, with songs like “Groove Shoes”, “Galactic Java Girl”, “The Pelican N’ Captain Bill”, “I Am the Oz” , and “Orbiting Annabelle” otherwise.

In fact, that’s one reason why I like shopping at cdbaby. Lots and lots of independent artists like Moonflower, large music samples (I bought “Moonflower” because I was already hooked on it by the audio samples before I got it), and reasonable prices[1].

In any case, I think it’s about time to share Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show with you:

Baby Makes Her Blue Jeans Talk – Dr Hook

Ok, yes, it’s a cheesy 80’s music video. Do you think they’d ever get away with doing a music video focused entirely on a lady’s rear otherwise? but I enjoyed this a lot despite the cheese.

I love the little touches: the guy who doesn’t notice his radio being stolen when she goes by, the blind guy being distracted by her going by, and such. Besides, Randi Brook, the actress in this video, is really hot.

Freakin’ At the Freakers Ball – Dr. Hook

The lyrics to this were actually written by Shel Silverstein. And Dr. Hook has actually removed a verse or two. Yes, they could have been worse. As it is, the lyrics may offend some of you[2], since they talk about the freaks going to the freakers ball…

Silvia’s Mother – Dr. Hook

This song is a classic. Very memorable song about a guy trying to call an ex-girlfriend to tell her goodbye, and her mother, who won’t let him talk to her.

When You’re In Love With A Beautiful Woman – Dr. Hook

All right, you probably have heard this one before, but thought I’d throw it in. I easily could have added other songs, like “The Yodel Song“, or the classic song “Looking For Pussy“, but decided to restrain myself… 🙂

[1] And, no, I’m not affiliated with them. I’m just a happy customer.

[2] Though I’m starting to think that we should just have a disclaimer on the blog in general…[3]

[3] And speaking of offending people, could you make sure to get the latest revision of Witchgun up, Sean?
