Sean Daily is an English major from New Jersey now living in Las Vegas, the Other City of Lights. "I consider 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas' to be comfort reading, I like the al pastor tacos at Tacos Mexico and I count among my literary influences the Chainsaw from 'Doom'. 'RRRRRR! You don't like that, do you, Mr. Undead Marine! RRRRRR!'"
Shanoah Alkire is our Discordian at large. "Born in Santa Cruz, I grew up in Grass Valley and the Bay Area, and now lurk in Las Vegas. My literary influences include Ray Bradbury,
Lewis Carroll, and Douglas Adams. I also program as a hobby,
and currently maintain the Gtk port of Angband. You can find
a rather old bio of me here."
Well, I’m sort of continuing with the mashup theme.
This isn’t actually a song mashup but a video mashup, though.
It starts out with a scene from the Fred Astaire movie Daddy Long Legs (1955), and then switches to scenes from The Band Wagon (1953). The music, however, is Michael Jackson’s Smooth Criminal.
So the overall effect is that of Fred Astaire dancing to Smooth Criminal. And, surprisingly, it works very well. And you can tell that Michael Jackson got inspiration from Fred Astaire…
Todays is a mashup by Party Ben, mixing Sgt Peppers Lonely Heart Club Band with Paradise City by Guns N’ Roses. And, yeah, the Beatles seem pretty popular for mashups. Not that I mind; they were a good band.
These two songs work pretty well together, probably because all the vocals were stripped out of the Guns N’ Roses song. ^_^
Continuing the mashup theme, here’s one that has a quite a few songs in the mix.
This is also by FAROUT, and is titled Funky Shack!. This is billed as being the B-52’s vs Lipps, Inc. vs Patrick Hernandez vs Yello vs Soulwax. I can hear Love Shack, Funky Town, Oh Yeah, and Born To Be Alive in here, so I can believe it.
As much fun as irritating Sean might be, I think I’ll stick with mashups for the moment.
This one is billed as The Beatles vs LCD Soundsystem vs The Kinks, and is by FAROFF. I can hear You Really Got Me and Get Back, and I believe the other song is Daft Punk is playing in my house, though that’s not a song I’m familiar with, so I could be wrong.
I did Japanese Shakespeare yesterday, so today I thought I’d post a track from the Japanese version of the musical of Jekyll & Hyde, Confrontation. Even if you don’t speak Japanese, you can totally tell the difference between Jekyll and Hyde in this piece (sung by Takeshi Kaga)…
I’m not really sure whether to classify this as a full post or a What the F*** for today, as it shares a little of both.
All I really know of this is that it is the opening to some sort of Japanese Shakespearean Musical. The ending has the same tune, only all the actors were ghosts.
Now here is “To be or not to be” turned into a song and dance number, the ‘Mondai’ song. Think this is the same musical. This has Tatsuya Fujiwara as Hamlet. I so wish I understood Japanese.
And here is Hamlet seeing the ghost of his father when trying to have sex with a fat Valkyrie. The kid has issues. ^_^
Well, keeping going with the theme for now. I may diverge into Japanese Shakespeare shortly, given the strange stuff I’ve been finding, though.
This next song, Cat and the Fiddle, I first heard on one of Heather Alexanders albums called Life’s Flame. I’m assuming it’s on the album Cat and the Fiddle, too, but I could be wrong.
It’s just a nice, light-hearted, fun song.
Dance all day with the cat and the fiddle; come and lay with the heather on the hill…
Well, I will, anyways, and since Sean hasn’t posted in more then a week, that’s what counts.
First, I thought I’d play the title track off of her album Midsummer. And, yes, this is about Robin Goodfellow, in his starring role in Shakespeares Midsummer Nights Dream, a play I’ve always had a bit of a liking for.
This song, King Henry, is hard to tell you about, because Heather herself did a better introduction at the beginning of it then I could write. She does some great voices on this one. And it is a traditional song, one of the Childe ballads. And how many songs have ‘More Meat! More Meat!‘ as part of the lyrics?
Since I’m posting this, depending on your perspective, either really late or really early, thought I’d include two songs.
I’m continuing on the Heather Alexander theme. First, thought I’d play the song High Barbary. This is probably one of my favorite piratey songs, and Heather does a great job on it.
And lets go with yet another rendition of Bedlam Boys. To be fair, this is one of my favorite renditions of Bedlam Boys, as well.
