Sean Daily is an English major from New Jersey now living in Las Vegas, the Other City of Lights. "I consider 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas' to be comfort reading, I like the al pastor tacos at Tacos Mexico and I count among my literary influences the Chainsaw from 'Doom'. 'RRRRRR! You don't like that, do you, Mr. Undead Marine! RRRRRR!'"
Shanoah Alkire is our Discordian at large. "Born in Santa Cruz, I grew up in Grass Valley and the Bay Area, and now lurk in Las Vegas. My literary influences include Ray Bradbury,
Lewis Carroll, and Douglas Adams. I also program as a hobby,
and currently maintain the Gtk port of Angband. You can find
a rather old bio of me here."
All right, strange transition time. Cthulhu, cute or not, is green. And green is clearly the traditional color representing Ireland. So it’s clearly time to play Irish music.
Trees are green, too, for that matter. So here is a group called Pentangle playing a traditional song called The Trees They Grow High. It’s entirely possible I’ve played it before here, as I own a cd with Joni Minstrel singing an awesome version of it. This version is just about as good. Only just about, though, because Joni is shear win.
But I promised Irishness, so here is the group Celtic Woman. This features Choe Agnew singing a beautiful song called Walking In The Air. I’m a sucker for these things. And yes, the lyrics may be important.
Damn, we’ve gone from kawaii to cosmic horror in just a day. It’s not such a stretch, though. I mean, both induce mind-numbing, soul-shattering horror in me, so why not?
The question, though, is who would win if those two went head to head. I hate to say it, but…
I mainly posted this for the quality of the animation. There’s a lot of spliced-together AMVs out there, but few are the anime fans who go crazy and make original anime… especially of this length and quality.
Or maybe they all do, and I’m blowing it out my ass. Either way, I like this.
This film was made by Shawn the Touched, with voices by Kate Peterson as Sarah and Kara Dennison as Jeanette and music by Louie Ambriz and Brendan Becker. Shawn the Touched sez:
This is my first all-Flash anime short, and first submission to Newgrounds. This short assumes familiarity with H.P. Lovecraft and his works referenced within. Most of his works are public domain and available for download.
Us? Familiar with Lovecraft? Nah. But to continue…
I don’t intend to make a series involving the same characters or situation…this was just a one-shot. You may see the character designs resurface in later works, though not as the same characters. Sarah’s design, for instance, is very similar to one of the girls in The Evil at Tentacle High, although of course in Cutethulhu she’s much younger. Think of it as the same actor, playing a different role. ^_^
Oh, I know what route I go down when I experience too much kawaii, too, Sean.
Admittedly, it first involves porting it here, where everyone can see it. But afterward, there are antidotes. In this case, I got together with a friend from work after work and played a board game he has with him called Arkham Horror.
Cthulhu won the first game, but we managed to beat an elder god the second time, though we house ruled one or two things. (Mainly because of only having two players.)
In honor of that, I thought I’d play a short creepy animation called A Lovecraft Dream. I think it speaks for itself.
Well, don’t have more bunnies at the moment, but I can still proceed with cute animations.
This one by a group called Pigloo would probably overload my cute threshold if it was in English. Fortunately, I don’t speak French or German. Frankly, with the kawaii factor, and dancing penguins, I’m surprised there isn’t a Japanese version.
This is the French version, Le papa Pingouin. And yes, even if you don’t understand the words, with the animation, you can get the gist.
And here we have the German version, Papa Pinguin. Just for fun, I played both at the same time, in sync, and you could tell the voices were the only difference. One of them must have been singing to an instrumental track from the other…
Well, if we’re going to have animated bunnies, then we ought to add this little confection from Elizabeth Ito, who made it as her sophomore film at CalArts. It’s Hot Crossed Bunnies, and it tears away the so-called “civilized facade” with which we fool ourselves to reveal the cutthroat, murderous of stuffed bunny dolls.
I’ll admit to sympathizing a bit with this one. The song is entitled Everyone Else Has Had More Sex Than Me, by TISM, and the animation is by Bernard Derriman. You can also see it in flash animation form.(If that website looks familiar, well, other flash animations on it have been featured here before…).
If nothing else, it’s a really cute bunny rabbit animation. And totally not work safe.
That’s all right, Sean. I was only there long enough to hear 4 bands or so play, anyways, so we don’t necessarily need to keep Worldfest going as a theme.
And it’s lacking in the requisite number of explosions for this blog, in any case. To rectify this, I thought I’d play a song by a band called Xploding Plastix titled Joy Comes In The Morning. It has a lovely animation featuring a rabbit, robots, rockets, and other goodness. And the overall song is pretty good, too.
Well, speaking of Worldfest, I couldn’t help but notice that Los Lobos was on the list of acts (and was the only name that I recognized). So here’s something good from them – Chuco’s Cumbia, off 2006’s The Town and the Country – performed at the Austin City Limits Festival on September 16, 2006.
Well, you know, Sean, Tommy Emmanuel wasn’t the only group I saw at Worldfest. I saw a duo called Bluehouse there, too, and bought a cd by them. And looking at the cd, Tommy Emmanuel was playing backup for them a bunch on it.
I found a clip of both of them playing together. The song, in this case, is Walls.
