5-10-09 William Shatner – Rocket Man

Ah yes, Kirk’s runaway libido. Gives new meaning to “boldly going where no man has gone before”.
But even is Chris Pine is a raving sex maniac, I’ll bet he doesn’t have the musical genius – the musical sooooooooper-genius – of William Shatner. Now, we’ve already shown Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds and Mr. Tambourine Man, but is that the extent of Shatner’s contributions to music? Oh mais non! It doesn’t even scratch the surface!
Take this spoken word cover (natch) of Elton John’s Rocket Man, filmed at some kind of science fiction award show in 1978. The pensive arthouse smoking! The Moog space music! The Mickey Spillane-like delivery! The Three Bills – one of them Funky Can’t Stop Dancing Bill! We can only hope J. J. Abrams’ “re-imagining” [1] of Star Trek rocks even half as hard as Shatner’s re-imagining of Elton John.

[1] I hate that word “re-imagining” . It’s not even a word! I looked! It’s not in the dictionary! And “imagine” is a verb, damn it, not a noun!
