12-4-08 Bob Marley – Stir It Up

Posted by gavortnik on December 4, 2008

But I don’t want to go to Mexico, Shanoah! I want to go to Jamaica! Mmmmm, jerked chicken…

Most people (like me) are more familiar with Johnny Nash’s 1972 version of Stir It Up. But Bob Marley beat Nash by five years, when he released it as a single on his Wail’n Soul’m label in 1967.

Whoever sings it, though, it’s a very nice, mellow song. You don’t expect a song with a name like Stir It Up to be soothing. You expect something like Korn’s Let’s Get This Party Started, which, if it isn’t the theme song for the World Federation of Cage Fighters Smashing Their Heads Through Brick Walls (WFCFSTHTBW), then it should be. Marley’s got another way to stir it up, and it doesn’t involve massive geologic damage. Nice.

Mexico

Ah, but why go to Cambodia, Sean, when you can go to Mexico?

Compadres in the Old Sierra Madres – Danno and The Waybacks

A classic song of lawlessness, and the old Sierra Madre mountains. You can find various live concerts of the Waybacks at archive.org, btw. I’m personally rather fond of the version of the song Blacksmith from their Higher Ground concert on 02-07-2006, which also has a good rendition of this song.

Mexico – Jefferson Airplane

I thought Jefferson Airplanes “Mexico” would be appropriate, as long as we’re on the subject…
