12-1-08 La Cage aux Folles

Posted by gavortnik on December 1, 2008

Well, Shanoah, I don’t know if that was Julie Andrews’ first of many topless scenes.  All I know is that it was her first, and possibly only, topless scene… that I know of.

Anyway, speaking of The Birdcage, Shanoah, you of course know what that was based off of: the Broadway play La Cage aux Folles (which I always thought was French for “the birdcage”, but that actually means “the cage with the insane ones”, according to Babelfish… which, when you think about it, also works).

Oh, you don’t know what La Cage aux Folles is? Well, I’ll let Lee Roy Reams break it down for you. This is the musical’s title song off 1994’s Jerry Herman’s Broadway: Live at the Hollywood Bowl.

“You may be dancing with a girl who needs a shave.” Yep, that’s the one and only reason why anyone watches La Cage: to see guys in drag.

And so I shan’t deny you. This is I Am What I Am, which closed out Act 1. This is from the Tony Awards, though I’m not sure which (possibly 1983, where it won a double fistful of awards).

Yeah, I can get behind that sentiment.

Well, not being sure how to respond to Julie Andrews topless,[1] and being jet lagged, think I’ll just play something by Flight of the Conchords.

Jenny

I stumbled upon this the other day, and found it rather amusing, so I figured it was worth sharing. And yes, this is the same band that played “The Humans are Dead“.

And you know,  I ended up watching a Robin Williams movie, Birdcage, during my vacation. Given how we’d been posting about Robin Williams before I left, funny how that works out.

For those not familiar with the movie, Robin Williams is gay, and runs a drag club and lives above it with another guy. His son is going to get married to the daughter of a right-wing senator who is a leader in the moral majority, and the senator wants to meet the sons parents before the wedding. So Robin Williams character and his lover have to pretend not to be gay. Which is harder then it sounds.

Here is the trailer:

I found it rather entertaining, but then, it is Robin Williams…

[1] And if that was her first topless scene, how many topless scenes did she have?
