11-2-08 Little Shop of Horrors – You’ll Be a Dentist

Posted by gavortnik on November 2, 2008

Well, you know, Shanoah, we could have gone on and on – for weeks! - about bats. But then you mentioned Little Shop of Horrors (which most people know from the 1986 movie) (which was actually based on a 1982 off-Broadway play) (which in and of itself is based on a 1960 movie that Roger Corman reportedly shot in three days) (which makes the 1986 movie a movie-based-on-a-play-based-on-a-movie) and, well, I had no choice.

Plus I had no idea what I was going to post that was bat-related.

Anyway, for your evening’s enjoyment, here’s a song from the 1986 movie and the 1982 play (but not the 1960 movie), with Steve Martin sporting rare non-white hair: Dentist!

The 1986 movie differs from the play in many important respects – not the least of which was the replacement of the play’s “downer” ending, which audiences complained about, to its current, happier ending.

But since we’re talking about Orin the Dentist (and because the original ending is, for some reason, behind an age-protection barrier on YouTube), I offer yet another stark difference between the play and the movie: Orin vs. the Masochist. The masochist was originally played by Jack Nicholson, who showed up in a number of other Corman productions. The part was taken out for the play but, wisely, put back in for the 1986 – and, even more wisely, given to Bill Murray.

Somewhere Bat Free

Posted by shanoah on November 2, 2008

Oh, I agree. We could easily go on for days like this.

For my neat thing for today, well, one of Batman’s traditional villians has always been the Joker. And some some of you may recall his on and off girlfriend, an Arkham psychologist, Harleen Quinzel who became obsessed with him, went crazy, and became Harley Quinn.

And here we have Harley Quinn doing a soliloquy:

Somewhere Bat Free (MsHarlyQuin)

Since I have a thing for Little Shop of Horrors, I couldn’t really resist a filk of one of the songs from it[1]. And “Somewhere That’s Green” really does fit well, in this case.

[1] In fact, I can sympathise with the urge to filk this song, as I wrote a filk of it myself once…

10-1-08 The Batty Bat

Posted by gavortnik on November 2, 2008

You’re right, Shanoah. We can go on about bats for days, and I have a sneaking suspicion that we’re going to do exactly that.

So, since we were on the subject of vampires and bats, why not have one ONE! ah! ha! ha! ha! with the Count from Sesame Street?
