Floating

Posted by shanoah on August 19, 2008

Glad to have you back, Sean.

It’s funny how inspiration works for these posts. Sometimes one of Seans posts, or one of my previous posts will inspire me, and lead to a post.

Other times, I may go randomly searching through a folder I have of videos I previously found that I wanted to post, but hadn’t placed together yet.

And sometimes I prepare the posts well ahead of time, then flesh them out.

This is one of the second types of post. I found two of these videos, and then racked my brain for others to put with them. And you know, that leaves the transition between two of the videos a little iffy, due to the direction changing slightly.

That was one of the main videos I wanted to post, though, and it wasn’t that bad, so I decided to live with it.

Wooden Ships - Jefferson Airplane

You may also know this as a Crosby, Stills, and Nash song. I enjoy this, but then, I rather enjoy antiwar songs; witness some of the Talking Heads songs I’ve posted.

Just wooden ships floating downstream…

Float - Flogging Molly

More about keeping boats afloat; metaphoric or otherwise. A good irish band from LA.

Float On - Modest Mouse

And the floating gets even more metaphorical. This song was one of the ones in Weird Al’s most recent polka “Polkarama!” from “Straight Outta Lynnwood”. Yes, one of the ways I get introduced to new songs is by looking up ones that he includes in his polkas.

The video somehow seems very Monty Pythonish in style to me, too. Yet, for some reason, the phrase that kept going through my head after hearing this, somewhat contrary to the message of the song, was “They all float down here”, as said by Pennywise in Stephen Kings It.

Which leads, somewhat tangentially, to the next video.

Counting the Beat With Pennywise the Clown (video by Cinemaniac84au)

Take one of the scariest horror movie villains, mix in an upbeat song by the Swingers, and you have this odd little video which puts me in a happy, upbeat mood.

Despite the fact that I remember It really creeping me out; and most of it was due to Tim Curry’s excellent performance as Pennywise.

(Though the ending to that movie was a let down; A giant, telepathic, sewer-dwelling spider? Give me a break…)
