Cover The World

Posted by shanoah on August 15, 2008

Today, I thought I’d feature three songs from a cd that I think is lost somewhere in my apartment. Either that or lost for good – I lost 10-20 cds on vacation a few years back.

There’s a company, Putumayo, that puts out these great collection cds of world music I like. One of those cds is a really cool one called “Cover the World” featuring various english songs covered in other languages.

You recall I was playing Toto’s Africa the other day? Here’s an African group singing it – in French:

Afrika - Tukuleur

It’s pretty cool, though I have to wonder how close the translated lyrics really are to the original. It has to have deviated somewhat, with “Mama Afrika”. I like that, though…

El lado más bestia de la vida - Albert Pla
And now a Spanish cover of Lou Reeds “Walk on the Wild Side”. The video certainly is strange. But then, it’s a strange song in English, too.
No Woman No Cry - The Nenes
And here we have a group of Japanese women singing Bob Marley’s “No Woman No Cry”. Amazing. You may want to turn up the volume for this.
