2-10-08 Jimi Hendrix – Voodoo Chile (slight reprise)

Posted by gavortnik on February 10, 2008

Your neat thing for today is one of my “holy shit” musical moments: hearing Jimi Hendrix’s guitar howl like a wild animal on Voodoo Child (slight reprise). This came off of his third and last album, Electric Ladyland.

This is actually the second “Voodoo Child” song on the album. The A-side version is a rather sedate live blues session, light years away from the fire and thunder of its B-side cousin. Imagine this coming out of the crappy speakers of a beat-up ‘88 Cavalier, and me with my jaw dropping, expecting more blues and instead getting whacked upside the head with the mighty axe of the guitar god Jimius.

Others have gone farther than Hendrix (like these guys, f’rinstance). But you can make a case that they never would have gotten there without Jimi blazing the way.

This is taken off a 1969 Hendrix performance on BBC’s Happening for Lulu and, yes, he plays the guitar with his teeth near the end.
